Here we see the mythical figure of Perseus
emerging from the water. Perseus, like Andromeda,
was restored by Giovan Battista Pieratti in 1636-37. Perseus was the mythological
figure who slew the Medusa. He had winged shoes, which allowed him to escape
the Gorgons. During his flight, he met Andromeda
who was held captive by a sea monster. Perseus freed her and she became his
wife. For Cosimo I, Perseus bore a potent symbolism; it aptly represented
his triumph over his enemies and the restoration of the Medici family to its
rightful glory.
